LC Valley
A few of the numerous volunteer opportunities
available in our area for the month of May.

Lewiston/Clarkson/Asotin:
· If you delight in children, the Summer
Fun Program at the YWCA is for you! It will run
from June 16-August 14, Mon-Thurs, from 9am-noon at the
YWCA. Volunteers will help children in K-6 grades
improve their reading and math skills.
·
The
Spalding Museum, a gorgeous facility, has a few open
spots available for those interesting in greeting
visitors. The National Park Service also has several
other volunteer positions open immediately. Choose from
Garden Caretaker, Special Events Assistant, or Park

· Volunteer gardeners at
the Osborn Community Garden share in the bounty! Find
out how you can begin to grow, give and glean today!

· The Community Action
Food Bank team can always use extra help filling food
boxes. Heavy lifting NOT required!
· Broaden your knowledge of our
beautiful valley and the surrounding area and then share
it with others; the Clarkston Chamber of Commerce is
seeking volunteers to help man the Visitor Center
located at 502 Bridge Street.
· Give your grandkids something useful
to do this summer! Nursing home residents love to bowl,
play tennis, and golf using a Wii video game system.
Volunteers are not required to do anything but show up
ready to visit and play.
· Animal lovers! Would you be interested
in accompanying junior high or senior high students into
the LC Animal Shelter so they can pet and walk the
animals? If so, won’t give us a call today?
· Do you know someone
with questions about Medicare and its new prescription
drug program? Do you know families with children who
need health insurance? Are you interested in helping
people learn more about health insurance coverage?
Contact Jo Castle at 746-7787. SHIBA (STATE HEALTH
INSURANCE BENEFITS ADVISORS) volunteers are trained to
educate, assist and advocate for consumers regarding
their health insurance, so they can make informed
decisions.
· CASA (Court Appointed
Special Advocate) volunteers advocate in court for
abused or neglected children. Pre-service training
provided, as well as a strong staff to support you on
the job.
· Homes of Hope helps
families prepare their homes to accept foster children.
If you can swing a hammer or use a paintbrush, Your
Volunteer Center would love to hear from you!
· Foster Parents need a
break, too! Would you like to help by providing
occasional respite care for a foster family?
· The Disability Action Center team
would love to have a volunteer for some general office
support. Volunteers answer the phones, take messages and
do light filing.

· Volunteer from your home providing
telephone reassurance to people. Crisis line advocates
listen to callers, many who are just lonely. On
occasion, the advocate may provide emergency referrals
using a handbook. Extensive orientation, training, and
initial job shadowing is provided.
· The team at the Salvation Army has an
immediate need for volunteers who would like to work one
half day a week greeting people and answering phones.
· Do you have four hours a week to help
cancer patients? The trained volunteers in the Cancer
Resource Center provide information about community
resources, general and site-specific cancer, and
day-to-day living issues. Training is required and
provided free of charge.
· Volunteer from home! Knit or crochet
hats, scarves, mittens and lap robes. Our office
distributes them to the local community. Yarn is
provided!
· The Habitat Store has a
task for you! One day or a regular schedule, light or
heavy work, administrative or hands on, experienced or
inexperienced, week days or week ends.
Strong people who can pick
up and deliver donations are especially needed!
· Do you believe in empowering our youth
to ensure their greatest future? Reading buddies sit
with students who struggle to read and provide an
opportunity to improve those reading skills. 85% of the
children who received help in the 2006-2007 school year
were brought up to reading level. No teaching experience
is necessary to join the America Reads team. Call Cathy

· Your Lewiston Red Cross office has
openings for volunteers to work 4 hours a week (or
more!) providing general office support.
An Ombudsman
advocates for the rights of residents in long-term care
facilities, mostly just through friendly visiting!
Positions are available in both Washington and Idaho.
We specialize in providing unique and meaningful
volunteer opportunities that meet community needs. Many

Do you have an hour a week you can spend with a
child? The Moscow Mentor Program aims to enhance our
children’s social, personal, and academic
development by involving caring adults in the
students’ school experience through one-on-one
mentoring.
If you have a special skill you’d like to pass
on to elementary school students in Deary, Troy or
Juliaetta, the 4H office in Moscow is seeking
volunteers for the 2008-2009 school year 4H program.
One kind volunteer is needed for a half of a day
on Wednesdays to assist a gentleman with Cerebral
Palsy in the Families Together office as he works on
the computer. The volunteer will help him with his
lunch and other small needs.
Clearwater County:
The National Park Service is
seeking volunteer hosts for the Canoe Camp this
summer. Call Susan at 208-476-5724.
Help people in community get
access to health care understand their options and
make informed decisions about health insurance,
including Medicare. The SHIBA office (STATE HEALTH
INSURANCE BENEFITS ADVISORS) in Orofino is in urgent
need of two volunteer counselors. Computer knowledge
is desirable. Excellent training and mentoring are
provided. You can make a difference for people of
all ages and gain important knowledge that may help
you personally or family and friends. For more

Your local LC Early
Childhood Program has numerous ongoing volunteer
opportunities to meet any skill or schedule! Choose
from building and grounds maintenance, distribution
of literature (with mileage reimbursement), general
reception, general office duties, classroom
assistant or kitchen assistant.
